And Then From the Mirror

Conner was always scaring his sister,
He’d jump from a closet to “boo!” her and “hiss!” her.

He made the hair stand on the back of her neck,
he made Marta into a terrible wreck.

Conner sneered saying “Bet you can’t scare me!”
“I’ll get you,” cried Marta, “I’ll scare you, you’ll see,

I’ll get a big dragon, from out of the sea,
I'll bring her on home; I’ll invite her to tea.

“My friend will protect me, she’ll do you right in.”
“No, that wouldn’t scare me,” Conner sneered with a grin.

“I’ll get you,” whined Marta, “and have all my wishes.
I’ll bet, I can scare you, a week’s dirty dishes!”

“Alright,” snickered Conner, “You have ’til tonight,
I’ll wash the plates if you give me a fright!”

So Marta went down to her place in the basement,
to think up a logical plan of encasement.

She boggled her brain for an hour or two
with plans to get snakes or big bears from the zoo.

But none of these plans would work to scare brothers
so she thought up seconds, thirds and others.

She looked in the mirror and shed a big tear,
“I’ll never scare Conner, if I try ‘til next year!”

And then from the mirror there came a low voice
that was chilling, chafing, hollow and hoarse.

“I’ll show you,” it bragged, “how to get Conner frightened,
a fright that will box, bug-boogle, and bite him.”…
